Affordable Apartments Available in Chelsea Clinton

Application Deadline July 8, 2008

Are you interested in living 13 blocks from AEA's Audition Center for $550/$700 per month?

The Clinton Housing Development Company, a trusted non-profit affordable housing developer, is accepting applications for 11 apartments in its recently remodeled building at West 53rd St and 11th Ave. Among the first groups whose members are invited to apply are Actor's Equity, SAG & AFTRA.

This project ("The Flats & The Old School") is a unique attempt to generate more affordable housing, and not just because of its un-Manhattan-like rents. Because of the particular mixture of financing sources and tax credits, the available apartments are designed to be shared, with separate bedrooms sharing kitchen and bath facilities. (An unusual arrangement to some, but not so unusual for folks used to couch-surfing, subletting a touring friend's bedroom, or sharing an overpriced one bedroom with several roommates.)

Aside from the affordability, what's also unusual is the quality of the remodel and the choice location near both midtown and the Hudson River Park. To be eligible, you need to be making at least $19,800/yr, but no more than $32,280/yr and able to provide the usual documentation to prove it. The good news is that once you're in, should you suddenly have a great year and want to stay, you can - there's no Penalty for Career Success. Subletting is allowed, with approval.

Rents increase by the yearly Rent Guidelines Board percentages for rent stabilized apartments.

Application Deadline July 8th, 2008

To be considered, go to the Membership Dept. for a referral letter, then bring that to 300 West 46th St. before July 8th, and ask for an application at the front desk. For further information, call CHDC @ 212-967-1644.

For details on CHDC and their innovative work, go to their website, www.clintonhousing.org, where you'll get an idea of the many different kinds of affordable housing they've invested in over the years.
